Burton has been a board member of Focus for many years and served as Treasurer. He has a Masters’ Degree in Social Work from Howard University ‘75. Prior to his graduate studies he was a school teacher and caseworker at YHED (now Teen Services). Before returning to Bermuda, he worked as a consultant in the public housing field addressing the use of paraprofessional workers to supplement the need for more costly professional social workers to carry out more elementary tasks such as intakes and referrals.
As an internal consultant with the Department of Management Services in the Bermuda Government for 24 years, he worked with Government managers to successfully problem solve organizational growth issues, improve its operational effectiveness through the application of human resources, job evaluation and organizational change strategies.
Burton has also carried out private consultancies with the Bermuda Monetary Authority, Cedarbridge Academy, BPSU, WEDCO and BLDC and served as a member of the strategic planning team of Bermuda College on two occasions.
His interest in addiction services stem from a two-week training session at the University of the West Indies in the U.S Virgin Islands, on alcohol addiction, sponsored by the Bermuda Government. The subsequent Cabinet Paper he helped produced marked the beginning of Bermuda’s Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). He is now an entrepreneur at the Royal Naval Dockyard.
